How to take the Star Ferry between Hong Kong and Kowloon

The Star Ferry is a ferry service between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, crossing the Victoria Harbour. It’s been in operation since 1888, and today it carries 26 million passengers per year. It’s very inexpensive, offers amazing views of the Hong Kong skyline, and is a convenient way to cross the harbour. We show you how to take the Star Ferry between Hong Kong and Kowloon.

The Star Ferry operates a couple routes across the harbour, but the most popular (and useful) route is between Central on Hong Kong Island and Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon. If you’re further east on the Hong Kong side, it also departs from Wan Chai.

The ride between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui (upper deck) and between Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui costs HK$2.70 on weekdays and HK$3.70 on weekends and holidays. (That’s less than US$0.50… a real bargain!)

As you approach the Star Ferry piers, you’ll see very clear signage in English and Cantonese directing you to where the ferry departs.

You’ll eventually make your way to turnstiles. Just before the turnstiles are a couple vending machines that sell tokens for the turnstiles. The vending machines accept coins, and HK$10 and HK$20 bills.
